December 2024

New South Wales

By Dan Robinson, President

Congratulations to the AILA organising committee on the successful National Conference. It was a great event, and I was pleased to see many other members and friends travel from New South Wales to attend.

We’ve had a busy calendar of events in the last quarter of 2024. The Dive in Festival celebrates diversity and inclusion in insurance and this year we were thrilled to have Kirk Docker, co-creator and director of the ABC’s You Can’t Ask That as special guest.

Brilliant insights into this year’s Crowdstrike outage, which affected millions across the globe, were shared in our TecHub event and planning is underway for another TecHub event in December.

The AILA NSW Young Professional Committee has had an exciting year so far, with a strong line-up of events and initiatives for young professionals in the insurance industry.

This year’s highlights include a hugely successful Mock Trial held in the NSW Supreme Court before Justice Cavanagh, where participants gained unique insights into coverage disputes in court proceedings.

The recent AILA Young Professionals Trivia Night, hosted by Hall & Wilcox, was expertly led by the entertaining James Foley of St James Hall Chambers and brought together young professionals for a night of friendly competition and networking.

Looking ahead, we are excited to announce the imminent launch of the AILA Young Professionals mentoring program, which will pair emerging insurance professionals with industry veterans to foster growth and development. Additionally, our annual networking event is just around the corner, with details to be announced soon!

I’m looking forward to our NSW AGM in February 2025 and will talk more to that in the next edition of Resolve.

Queensland

AILA’s National Conference, Sunny Side Up, held on the Gold Coast in September was a resounding success with plenty of industry participation and content.

The Queensland committee is planning our next in person event – the annual Mock Trial where attendees can witness first-hand how an insurance related dispute unfolds in Court. This year, a star-studded line-up of barristers will showcase their skills.

The Honourable Rebecca Treston KC will preside over the Mock Trial – How did you get your hands on that? – with Richard Douglas KC and Peter Hastie KC appearing for the hypothetical parties. The dispute involves a solicitor who has made an inadvertent disclosure, and another party who was sent privileged material (including a compromising picture of the defendant) by a hacker seeking revenge. Don’t miss the action on 5 December at Banco Court, Brisbane.

South Australia

It has been a busy end to the year with several events in recent weeks, starting with the popular Young Professionals Quiz Night on 14 November in Adelaide.

December kicked off with our 2024 Year in Review breakfast, featuring The Honourable Justice Mark Livesey who took a deep dive into the key cases that have influenced insurance and tort law over the last year.

I’m looking forward to another action-packed year in 2025 and wish all our members a very happy Christmas and New Year.
