Ian is an honorary Professor of Law at the University of Technology Sydney. He was appointed by the Insurance Council of Australia in May 2012 to conduct the Independent Review of the General Insurance Code of Practice. Ian has written, with Professor Robert Merkin and Michael Kirby, the fourth edition of Sutton on Insurance Law published in December 2014.
The presentation will be titled 'The Insurance Social Contract: 1788 and all that' and is inspired by Geoff Masel’s life and work. It will discuss our insurance contract statute law and common law in the context of its social and historical origins.
“1788 and all that” signals an irreverent look at the historical movements and people who made the insurance industry. The serious and good work of insurance involves integrity, innovation and implementation. We need to remind ourselves of the great achievements of the insurance industry through these virtues, and its occasional shortcomings, while reminding ourselves that a sense of fun is also necessary.
Our Branches will release regsitration information in the lead up to their presentation date, please refer to our events section of the website for further information.
